  • This Week on DVD: January 24, 2012 (Cancer Awareness Edition)

The movie gods have blessed us with two dramas about cancer this week. Also: boxing robots. Happy viewing!

    50/50
A comedy, about cancer? Only sort of. Keep the Kleenex box close. Read my full review here.

    Restless
Gus Van Sant's worst reviewed movie since the "Psycho" debacle in 1998. And since that was a shot-for-shot remake, I guess that makes this Van Sant's worst movie, period. A death-obsessed loner teenager (Henry Hopper) falls in love with a terminally ill classmate (Mia Wasikowska.) Seen "Submarine" yet? No? Watch that instead.

    Real Steel
"Rocky" with robots. Actually, it's more "Over the Top," the Sylvester Stallone arm-wrestling movie he made after a dozen "Rockys." Surprisingly, from the reviews, it's better than that makes it sound.

    Paranormal Activity 3
The guys who directed the odd documentary "Catfish" take over the PA franchise for the third installment, which functions as a prequel to the first two films. This is horror based on what you can't see; I hear the best bit involves a camera attached to a oscillating fan.

    The Whistleblower
Rachel Weisz stars in this one-woman-against-the-world drama as a UN peacekeeper who uncovers a sex-trafficking ring in Bosnia, and then layers of corruption in the police, defense contractors and even the UN itself as she tries to bring the perpetrators to justice. Some called it sharp, and intelligent; others said it was confusing, flat and overwhelming in its attention to detail.
